Water Meters: Cold Weather Do’s and Don’ts

  1. Do be sure that your meter box lid is closed tightly on the meter pit to prevent cold air from entering. If it is a locking type lid be sure it is locked tightly.
  2. Do install blanket insulation over the meter and the pipes in the meter pit if there is any possibility of freeze ups.
  3. Do be sure that dirt is mounded up, around and above the ring of the meter box cover. It should be level with the very top of the meter box lid.
  4. Do not put any type of fire or open flame (such as burning paper, torch, etc.) in the meter pit to attempt to thaw out the line. Damage to the meter is likely if this is done. Any heat damage to the water meter will be charged to the customer.
